Atletico Madrid History from 1903 until now


 

The 'First whistle'

On the 26th of April of 1903, Athletic Club de Madrid was born. Created by a group of Basque students who decided to assemble a group with one goal: to found a new institution that would compete with the noblest and most impeccable sporting talent. Don Enrique Allende was named the first president. The shirt was white and blue, with black or white shorts.

The beginning of competition

May 2, 1903

The first Athletic football ground was located on a field behind the walls of the Buen Retiro Park, and on the 2nd of May of 1903, the first match was played between the club members.

Atlético goes Red & White

January 22, 1911

On the 2nd of January of 1911, the shirts were changed to red and white. From that moment, the nickname "Colchoneros" was born (Colchoneros means Mattressers), due to the similarity of the shirt design with mattress covers of that time.

New home in O’Donnell

February 9, 1913

President D. Julian Ruete, initiated the construction of a new ground that would highlight Athletic as one of the biggest clubs in Spain. On the 9th of February of 1913, the new ground known as O'Donnell was opened.

A ‘Front Page’ Club

November 22, 1917

On the 22nd of November of 1917, Madrid-Sport, the prestigious sports journal of the time in Madrid, published on their cover, the Athletic Club de Madrid club badge, whose design has remained virtually unchanged.

The first title

January 23, 1921

On the 23rd of January of 1921, the club recorded its first official title by winning the Federation Regional Championship against Madrid. This was the springboard for the club to move in to the National Division of Honour, the Spanish Championship.

The Metropolitano, all the Atléticos’ new home

May 13, 1923

The Metropolitano Stadium was inaugurated on the 13th of May of 1923, becoming the new home of all the Atléticos. Don Juan de Borbón did the honour kick off in front of 25,000 spectators.

Champions in Chamartín

1925

In 1925 and 1928, the team conquered the Regional Championship. In the first one, they won Gimnástica Española 3-1 at the Metropolitano. Three years later, the rival was Real Madrid, that was beaten 1-3 at Chamartín.

Atletico soars

1939

With the beginning of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, all national sport competitions were suspended. When the conflict came to an end, the club joined Aviación Nacional, sport section of the Air Force, emerging under the name Athletic Aviación de Madrid.

The madness of the two titles

1940

In the early 40s, the biggest triumphs in the history of the Club arose: the conquest of the league in the 1939/40 and 1940/41 seasons. Ricardo Zamora – in the photo with his squad – was the man who launched the team to the top.

The silky forwards

1947

During the 1940s, the famous group called the "Silky Forwards" was formed by players like Juncosa, Vidal, Silva, Campos and Escudero who were the delight of all true connoisseurs of football. They were followed by big signings such as Marcel Domingo, Carlsson, and Larbi Ben Barek, to form a legendary team.

The successes continue

1949

Helenio Herrera arrives to the bench the 11th of August of 1949. Under his command, League titles in 1949/50 and 1950/51 were won.

Collar and Peiró, the “infernal wing”

1959

In 1959, Joaquín Peiró and Enrique Collar formed the "infernal wing,” one of the best pairs in football history, that produced dream-like plays down the left wing.

Atletico has its first Cup

1960

The 1960s was very fruitful in terms of results. In the 1959/60 season, with the help of coach José Villalonga, the club won its first General’s Cup (now the King’s Cup), beating its historical rival Real Madrid 1-3 at their own stadium.

A Spanish great

July 2, 1961

For the second consecutive time, on the 2nd of July of 1961, he Santiago Bernabéu witnessed a historic win against the eternal rival after a 3-2 for the Atléticos.

Europe is red and white

May 10, 1962

After eliminating different rivals, the team made it to the first international final in its history: the Cup Winners Cup. It was held on the 10th of May of 1962 in Glasgow (Scotland), with a 1-1 result against ACF Fiorentina of Italy. The tie-breaker match was played at the Neckarstadion of Stuttgart (Germany), where Atlético beat ACF Fiorentina by 3-0. Thus, the club won the first official European trophy of its history.

A cup team

1965

In the 1964/65 season, with Mr. Vicente Calderón as president, Atlético won their third General’s Cup after beating Real Zaragoza 1-0 in the final. The following year, in the 1965/66 season, Atlético won a League title again

Our new home

October 2, 1966

On the 2nd of October of 1966, the stadium at the Manzanares is inaugurated. Unlike the stadiums of the time, all the tickets were seated, a proud moment for the red and white fans. In the photo, the first starting eleven that took the field.

The successful 70’s

1969

The 1970s was a decade that brought great satisfactions for the fans of Atlético de Madrid. In the 1969/70 season, the red and white club won its sixth league title, thanks to the French coach and former Atlético player, Marcel Domingo, who counted on one of the most memorable teams in its history: Rodri, Melo, Ovejero, Eusebius, Calleja, Irureta, Adelardo, Luis Aragonés, Alberto, Ufarte and Gárate.

Another title at the Castellana

July 8, 1972

After a sensational trajectory in the General’s Cup in 1972, the Santiago Bernabéu once again witnessed how Atlético won a title on the 8thn of July. Valencia could do nothing. The goals of Salcedo and Gárate were enough to lift the General’s Cup.

From Manzanares to the Calderón

July 14, 1972

The Manzanares Stadium, called like that since 1966, was renamed as Vicente Calderón Stadium on the 14th of July of 1971 in honour of the president of the club. The stadium was officially inaugurated on the 23rd of May of 1972, for a match between Spain and Uruguay.

Then came the seventh

1973

The year 1973 was very successful after conquering the seventh League of its history with the German Merkel on the bench.

The disappointment in Brussels

May 15, 1974

On the 15 th of May of 1974, in Brussels, Atlético de Madrid played the 1973/1974 European Cup final against Bayern Munich, tying 1-1, and being beaten by the Germans days later by 4-0.

Red and white Intercontinental

1975

Bayern refused to play the 1975 Intercontinental Cup against Club Atlético Independiente de Avellaneda, therefore, Atlético de Madrid, as 1974 European Cup runners-ups, played a two-legged final in 1975. The first leg with Luis Aragonés as a coach was won 1-0 by Independiente. In the second leg, Atlético won 2-0 to become champions.

A historic cup

1976

During the 1975/76 season, we won our fifth General’s Cup, it’s last edition under that name.

Champions for San Isidro

1977

In the 1976/77 season, we won our eighth league title. The title was played on San Isidro’s Day. Double cause to celebrate.

Kings of Spain

1985

In 1985, the team won its sixth King’s Cup against Athletic Club de Bilbao. The title was won at the Bernabéu.

Superchampions of Spain

1985

The 1985/86 season started brilliantly, winning the Spanish Super Cup against FC Barcelona.

Jesus Gil becomes Chairman

1987

In 1987, after the death of Vicente Calderón, Jesús Gil y Gil becomes the Club’s chairman with the player Paulo Futre as the flagship player of his sporting project.

Abel, a record keeper

1991

Goalkeeper Abel Resino is unbeaten for 14 rounds and achieves the unbeatable record for not conceding a goal in 1,275 minutes.

Another Spanish Cup

June 29, 1991

On the 29th of June of 1991, led by Santos Ovejero Iselin, we became King’s Cup Champions for the seventh time.

The Bernabéu wore red and white

June 27, 1992

On the 27th of June of 1992, directed by Luis Aragonés, we won our eighth King’s Cup after beating Real Madrid 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

The glorious double

1996

The 1995/96 season was one of the most important seasons for the Club, because for the first time in team history, we won "the double" by winning the League and the King’s Cup in the same season.

Pantic's header

April 10, 1996

On the 10th of April of 1996, the team beat FC Barcelona 1-0 at the Romareda Stadium with a goal scored with a header by the Serbian Pantic to a pass from the winger Delfí Geli. It was our history’s ninth King’s Cup.

Antic and the legendary team

May 25, 1996

On the 25th of May of 1996, the team led by Radomir Antic claimed the Club’s ninth League title.

A return trip

2002

After Atlético Madrid were relegated to the Second Division at the end of the 1999/00 seaso, the team returned to the First Division in 2002, under the direction of Luis Aragonés. A young player named Fernando Torres coming from the ranks was starting to stand out.

A centenary club

2003

On the 26th of April of 2003, the Club celebrated the centenary of the Club, an event focused on honouring the entity and especially the Atlético fans, who were excited and proud to participate in all the scheduled activities, such as carrying the longest flag in the world at that time from the Neptune Fountain to the Calderón Stadium.

We move

December 12, 2008

At the end of 2008, a great event takes place. the Club reached an agreement with Madrid’s City Council to build a new stadium. A pillar that will strengthen the entity.

First European Super Cup

April 8, 2010

The red and white showcases received on the 27th of August of 2010 their first European Super Cup after beating Inter Milan, the champions of the Champions League. The match, played at the Louis II of Monaco stadium, ended 2-0 in favour of Atleti.

Forlan seals the Europa League

May 5, 2010

Atlético Madrid, with Quique Sánchez Flores at the lead, became champions of the first UEFA Europa League edition, formerly the UEFA Cup, in a thrilling final played on the 5th of May of 2010 at the HSH Nordbank Arena in Hamburg. Atlético beat Fulham FC, after extra time, by 2-1 with two goals from the Uruguayan Diego Forlán.

Our new place in the world

December 5, 2011

The Crystal Gallery of Madrid’s City Council was the chosen place to present our new stadium. The team attended the event alongside many other personalities, in addition to the Mayor, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón, and the chairman of the Club, Enrique Cerezo. A 3D video was shown to recreate the final aspect of the Club’s new place in the world.

Bucharest crowns Atlético

May 9, 2012

On the 9th of May of 2012, Bucharest’s National Stadium witnessed the UEFA Europa League final against Athletic Club de Bilbao, which meant our second title in the competition after winning 3-0 with two goals from Falcao and one from Diego Ribas.

Falcao and Miranda win another Supercup

August 31, 2012

The European Super Cup final played on the 31st of August of 2012 against Chelsea FC was the fifth played by the team in less than two years. Our team won Europe’s champion 4-1 with a hat-trick by Falcao, best player of the final, and another goal from Miranda.

Diego Costa and Miranda lead a comeback in a historic final

May 17, 2013

On the 17th of May we won our tenth King’s Cup. It was at the Bernabéu in an epic match that needed extra time to crown a winner. We were down by a goal, but the goals from the Brazilians Diego Costa and Miranda made it 1-2.

Champions at the Camp Nou

May 17, 2014

The 2013-14 League was decided on the last round. We visited an FC Barcelona who was forced to win if it wanted to celebrate the League title. But Gerardo Martino’s team could not beat our team. Godín’s goal after a corner kick counteracted Alexis’ goal, which had put the local team ahead. The 1-1 draw was worth a title, our tenth League Championship.

UEFA Runner-ups

May 24, 2014

After conquering the League at Camp Nou, Lisbon received our team for the last game of the season. The Champions League final against Real Madrid was won by the white team (4-1) in the extra-time, despite our team being ahead for the majority of the match thanks to a goal from Godín.

The Supercopa is red and white again

August 23, 2014

In August 2014, our team beat Real Madrid and conquered its second Spanish Super Cup in Club history, after the one won in 1985 against FC Barcelona. The two-legged final, was resolved with a 2-1 in our favour after we tied 1-1 at the Bernabéu and won 1-0 at the Calderón in the return leg. Raúl García and Mandzukic scored our goals.

Runner-ups of Europe

May 28, 2016

Our team lost to Real Madrid in the penalties, after a 1-1 tie in 120 minutes. Yannick Carrasco scored for the red and white team. On the road to Milan we defeated six champions of different leagues: Galatasaray, Astana, Benfica, PSV, FC Barcelona and FC Bayern Munich.

June 26, 2016

Atlético de Madrid Women’s team won its first title in the Cup of her Majesty the Queen after winning the grand final played at Las Rozas Football City against FC Barcelona (2-3). The goals were the work of Ángela Sosa, Silvia Meseguer, and Esther González.

League Champions!

May 20, 2017

The team needed to win to secure the title in the last week and they did not fail. Two early goals by Esther and the captain Amanda were enough to defeat Real Sociedad (2-1) and to certify the first championship of our women's team. A packed Wanda Training Complex carried our Ladies in a historic day for the club.

Farewell Calderón!

Our team enjoyed a 3-1 home win against Athletic Club in the last official match played at the Vicente Calderón stadium. Fernando Torres scored a brace and Ángel Correa scored the last goal. An emotional day for everyone that finished with a tribute to what has been our stadium for the last 50 seasons.

A Legendary Final

In the last farewell at the Vicente Calderón, we lived a true football party in red and white. The Legendary Final packed the red and white stadium in a charity game that brought together different historic players who defended our colours in a match against a team of stars of the world of football.

A DREAM COME TRUE

September 16, 2017

The first ever game in the Wanda Metropolitano was against Málaga (1-0). Antoine Griezmann scored the only goal of the match and became the stadium’s first ever goalscorer. After the final whistle, the players gave a victory lap and a firework spectacle wowed the fans. Just four days later, UEFA designated the Wanda Metropolitano as the host stadium for the 2019 Champions League Final.

BACK-TO-BACK LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

Our Ladies won the Liga Iberdrola for the second time in two years in stunning fashion. On matchday 30, they beat Zaragoza CFF 1-6 and lifted the title. Sonia Bermúdez was our top goalscorer with 20 goals. Congrats, ladies!

THREE TIMES EUROPA LEAGUE WINNERS

We beat Olympique de Marseille in the UEFA Europa League final at the Stade de Lyon with a spectacular 0-3 win. Antoine Griezmann scored a double and Gabi the third of the night. Following the win, our lads qualified for another UEFA Super Cup, which took place on 15 August.

For the third time, our team won the UEFA Super Cup. In Tallinn, we beat Real Madrid 2-4 to lift the UEFA Super Cup once again! Diego Costa scored a brace and Saúl and Koke scored the rest.

A spectacular Esther González hat-trick give us the victory in the last game of the season to clinch the league trophy for the third consecutive season and third time in our history. Congrats, ladies!

VALLADOLID, SETTING FOR OUR ELEVENTH LEAGUE TITLE

As on nine of the 10 previous occasions when we were crowned champions, the 2020/21 LaLiga was once again decided on the final match day. In an intense away game against Real Valladolid, our team won 2-1 thanks to the goals from Ángel Correa and Luis Suárez, to complete the comback and win the title for the eleventh time.

A CHAMPION'S COMEBACK!

Thanks to goals from Lucía Moral and Banini in the closing stages of a thrilling derby, Atlético de Madrid Femenino levelled a 2-0 deficit against Real Madrid in the Copa de la Reina final and won their second cup after a penalty shoot-out. Menayo, Irene G. and Eva Navarro converted their penalties and two saves from Lola Gallardo crowned the team coached by Manolo Cano.
